Conscious Commentary on Contemporary Commercials #1
Midol
the “Reverse the Curse” ad
I just saw this commercial for the first time today and I will freely say I am not impressed but I am not surprised either. I am an advocate for unconceived ovulation. I am pro-menstruation. I do not believe that it is something dirty, shameful or something to hide. We should be allowed to menstruate freely and without complication but sadly that is not the case.
The commercial states [this is from my memory] “There is a reason it’s called the curse, _____________ ** , cramps and bloating” (commercial shows women in their bras with extended bellies) Then it goes on to blab about Midol…and shows a happy woman running down the beach.
I assume that after we get a euphoric high from taking Midol, we must run around and what not. We feel alive and energetic released from the repressions of menstruation, something that is inconceivable when plagued with cramps and bloating. I remember, long ago in the past, when I used to take Midol and I used to get so fatigued, I would have to sleep for hours and I felt groggy and odd, definitely not in any condition to run up and down the beach.
I just really have a problem with the new tagline “Midol, Reverse the Curse”. How can mensturation be a curse? To many sexually active women, getting your period is a blessing because it means you do not have to start planning on when to have an abortion.
That is all I have to say for now.
** I cannot remember what the first "repulsive" characteristic of menstruation was
