My Wal-Mart Wanderings I : Our Oversexed Culture

I saw something very disturbing in Wal-Mart this afternoon.

Due to the humid weather, I decided that maybe it was time to purchase some shorts, since my body-hating days are long behind me. Off to the fitting rooms I went and it was there that I saw the most disturbing thing ever. On the rack of "Returns" there was an itty-bitty bra sized [I'm assuming] for a 6 or 7 year old!!!! A cute yellow and pink underwire bra, sized AAAAAA (it was modeled very similarly to its adult counterpart).

When I left my fitting room [no success with the shorts, I am going to peruse Value Village next] I had a closer inspection of the bra, subconsciously I wanted it to be for an adult but alas, the tags identified it to be for a child, with the
"KiDurable" or whatever it is called, guarantee.

This is so disgusting; 6-year olds do not need to wear underwire bras with semi-cups. What happened to white undershirts with pink frilly ribbons and a pink bow in the front?

As I am writing this a memory was targeted. Not very long ago I was riding on the bus and a 5 or 6 year old girl was sitting close to me. I noticed she has a sequined-embellished patch on one of the legs of her jeans. The word was "Hot". I am sure I made a face when I could actually make out what the word said and my brain immediately thought... why would a little girl need the word "Hot" printed on her jeans. I mean I think it is cheesy when women do it, not to mention little girls. What are we telling the little girls of the future?

Can we not see how disgusting it is? Some of us can, and I think we should start doing things about it.
