Another Year… and Another Chance for Paul McCartney to get His Knickers in a Bunch

The [Estimated] 350th Annual Atlantic Seal Hunt 2009

Another year…another protest.

A tradition that has been going on for hundreds of years… providing money/food for those who participate in it.

Why is it always such a big deal?

and

Why is Canada always the main target of speculation when it also takes place in the coasts of; the United States, Greenland, Namibia, Norway, Britain, Sweden and Finland?

The pelts are sold as well as the meat and fat (The fat is used in beauty products)

Personally I am against cruelty to animals and I am an avid animal lover. Though I have no desire to participate in this tradition, I do not mind that it is done for another person’s livelihood.

Seals have a gigantic population, around 5.5 million (that is roughly 5 seals for every Canadian). The hunt helps in the population control thus also helping in their ecosystem and the other species that reside in it. This is similar to the Deer Population Control situation that happens in Eastern Ontario. In the fall a certain amount of deer are hunted to control their ever increasing numbers to maintain the ecosystem and manage their food supply (ultimately to prevent the deer from starving to death).

In the past pictures of the whitecoated baby harp seals being slaughtered were used in the protests. Due to the rabble-rousing images Canada banned ALL HUNTING OF WHITECOATS AND BLUEBACKS IN 1987.

Today, it is common for anti-sealing groups to use these images as fodder for their campaigns. Technically this is inaccurate, however I will mention this fact; the pups lose their whitecoats at an early age, most harp seals are taken under the age of three months.

This activity provides the sealers and fishermen with 1/3 of their income. This is important especially since the price of pelts are going down each year [http://www.cbc.ca/news/background/sealhunt/]

I hope I have provided a little insight into the situation. If you do not agree with this then that is fine, do your research and make informed decisions. Do not disagree because a certain celebrity does; or some scantly clad vegetarian on a poster told you to.

Before the usual celebrities go blabbing and whining about it while wearing their leather shoes… I say unto them, go check the ingredients in your make-up and then go take an education trip to these places and live in these areas of Eastern Canadian coastlines before you go shooting your mouths off… Go and live like the indigenous peoples [of the area] and see why they need to hunt the seals. You know, not everyone can afford a personal trainer and chef for their Lhasa Apsos.
