Advancements in technology are always so wonderful, always changing to be better and better.
Now what of this… Google Latitude. From the advertisements I have seen, and the newscasts it appears to be a tracking device you can set up in a cell phone. Your “friends” can watch where you are… see how long you have been in one particular place, where you are going, [what your thoughts are] and so forth.
Yes I understand, this will be a good technology for paranoid parents watching what their children get up to, what they are doing and possibly whom they are doing it with.
But seriously? I see this causing more harm than good. It will be a great tool for domestic arguments… “Why were you are this location for 20 minutes!?!?!” says one partner to the other. Co-workers will be able to see where you traipse off to on your lunch break, and friends will be able to see exactly how long you may spend in the erotic cinemas (if that is your thing of course).
I personally am not going to sign up for this service because I don’t want everyone knowing where I am… and besides, it would be so boring because I am at home most of the time anyway.
They are targeting this as a “positive” piece of technology but I see it as one more step closer to monitoring people (something that much of the populace seems obsessed about). To know where everyone is at exact moments of the day. What is next? Probably higher graphics to pin-point exact movements like, how often you go to the washroom everyday.
And for those young pups that read my bog… I am referring to the Orwell’s Big Brother and not the lame reality television show.
